María Pita Statue

In the Plaza de María Pita, opposite the City Hall, stands a monument in honour of María Pita. The bronze statue, created by Xosé Castiñeiras in 1998, shows the heroine holding the lance with which she killed the English commander, as she clutches the lifeless body of Gregorio de Racamonde, her husband, with her other hand. The statue stands 9.31 m high, made up of a platform of 45 cm steps, a 5.56 m pedestal and a 3.30 m sculpture weighing 30 tonnes.

At her feet is a censer, a symbol of the liberal character of the Coruñan people.
