This traditional food market is located opposite Plaza del Humor.

The San Agustín Market, with its spectacular parabolic roof, became a symbol of modernity in the 1930s. It is one of the most audacious, emblematic buildings of the first half of the 20th century, and one of the most coherent with its destiny.

The San Agustín market is the work of two architects who were key in shaping the city in the 20th century, Santiago Rey Pedreira and Antonio Tenreiro, both municipal architects when they took on the project for the new market in 1932.

Studies suggest that these two municipal architects were inspired by the public market in the French city of Reims to create this structure with a parabolic roof, a thrilling challenge for Galicia in the 1930s. A similar market exists in Leipzig, Germany.

The market's unique parabolic roof consists of a 15-centimetre-thick sheet of concrete embedded with strips of glass.

Architecture professionals don't hesitate to describe it as the "Galician Guggenheim" of its time. At the time of its construction, it was the most innovative, modern and technologically advanced building constructed in Spain. The project, including its unique concrete shell, is an architectural miracle shaped by the hands of two professionals who, from a corner in the north of Spain, knew how to connect directly with the European avant-garde that was thriving in those years.

In fact, the San Agustín market is one of the three works in A Coruña included in the catalogue of the prestigious Docomomo (Documentation and Conservation of the Modern Movement), a study carried out by the Mies Van der Rohe Foundation, which also includes the Corrales block of flats in the Elviña neighbourhood and the University College of Labour Relations.
