The goose barnacle harvesters of the Tower of Hercules

The goose barnacle is the king of shellfish, the most highly prized. That's because it is the most difficult to harvest. The goose barnacle gatherers go out every day in search of this shellfish, trying to dodge the waves and the raging of the Atlantic.

This crustacean grows exclusively on rocks pummelled by the waves, and its spiky shape is very characteristic of the Galician coastline. At the foot of the Tower of Hercules, on the "A Galera" rock, the most valuable goose barnacles of our coastline tend to be found. It is the difficulty of capturing them that means that the harder they are to reach, the better quality they are. The A Coruña Fishermen's Guild is in charge of their harvest.

Also particularly well known are those of O Roncudo (Corme, Ponteceso), on the Costa da Morte, where goose barnacles are extracted every day from the rocks. Watching at the way they work, it is easy to deduce that no matter how high the price, they will always be cheap.

And because the product is so good, there's no need for a complex cooking process. All you need to do is boil them in salted water for two minutes.
