Picasso in A Coruña

Picasso was born in Malaga, however, it was in A Coruña that his birth as a painter occurred. With the Picasso House-Museum, A Coruña collaborates in spreading knowledge of the life and work of the man considered to be the greatest artist of the 20th century.

In October 1891, the Ruiz Picasso family arrived in A Coruña from Malaga, when Picasso's father, José Ruiz, got a teaching position in the Provincial School of Fine Arts. The school was not far from 14 Calle Payo Gómez, where the family lived during their years in A Coruña. Pablo was about to turn ten. He studied for three years at secondary school, with mediocre marks, and three years at the School of Fine Arts, earning extraordinary marks.

A Coruña was also the city where he first experienced love (with the Méndez Gil sisters) and death (that of his sister Conchita), the city where his political conscience was born, inspired by the pro-republic views of his patron, the doctor Pérez Costales, and the city where he exhibited his work for the first time. Later, Picasso's father's transfer to the School of Fine Arts of Barcelona meant the family's farewell to the city in April 1895.

Picasso arrived a child in A Coruña, and he left a painter. He would never return, but he would always treasure the memory of his time here. Many years after his departure, he recalled, "A Coruña is the city where my senses awakened, and that is something that neither time nor distance can erase".
