Plaza de Azcárraga

This square is also known as Flour Square (Praza da Fariña in Galician; Plaza de la Harina in Spanish), as it was a market square until the end of the 19th century.

It was the centre of social and political life, housing the administrative Casa de la Intendencia, the City Hall and the artillery storehouse.

The Fountain of Desire, cast in the Dungem workshops in Paris in 1870, stands out in the centre of the square. It is crowned by a sculpture of a woman carved in bronze, representing desire, holding a lantern in her right hand. The fountain is framed by plants and ash trees on all sides, forming a sort of roof that covers the square. All this makes it one of the most beautiful squares in the city.
